Why CRM clean-up comes before fancy automation
Bad fields and duplicate leads break workflows faster than any missing Zap.

Automation magnifies whatever is already in the CRM. If owners, stages, and source fields are messy, every workflow ships the mess faster. That is why “connect HubSpot to Slack” feels exciting in a demo and noisy in production.
Before you connect n8n, Zapier, or Make, define the minimum clean data set. Required fields for a new lead. One owner model. Stage names that mean the same thing to sales and ops. A rule for duplicates so the same person does not get three follow-ups from three tools.
Clean-up does not mean a six-month data project. It means fixing the fields the automation will read and write. HubSpot, Salesforce, Zoho CRM, Pipedrive, and GoHighLevel can all support sharp workflows once the team agrees on those basics.
When the CRM is clean enough to trust, automation becomes useful: routing, reminders, enrichment, and reporting land on records people already believe. Skip this step and you will spend more time undoing automation than running the business.
